Is plastic surgery and cosmetic surgery the same?

This is the most frequent question asked by patients. Even if those procedures both aim at improving a patient’s aesthetically, they are not the same as they work differently.

Cosmetic or esthetic surgery

Surgeons use different techniques, and they focus on enhancing a patient’s appearance aesthetically. Cosmetic surgery is elective, and can be performed on different areas of the body.

Here are some cosmetic and/or esthetic surgeries often requested by patients.

Face: Rhynoplasty, cheek, chin, facelift, eyelift, and neck lift

Breast: Augmentation using implants, breast-lift, and breast reduction

Body: Tummy-tuck, liposuction, lipo-scuplture

Other esthetic treatments: Skin rejuvenation, laser, Botox, filler treatments

Plastic surgery

Plastic surgery is defined as a surgical specialty dedicated to reconstruction of the body and face defects due to diseases, burns, trauma or congenital disorders, and is also intended to correct dysfunctional areas. Plastic surgery is basically a reconstructive surgery.

Here are some of plastic surgeries requested by patients:

  • Breast reconstruction
  • Sagging skin surgery
  • Burn repair surgery
  • Congenital defects

Can we do 2 or 3 surgeries at the same time?

Surgeon can do 2 or 3 procedures at the same time if the patient is in very good health, as long they are on the same area of the body.

An example of surgeries that cannot be combined is breast implants, and glutius implants.

Can breast implants cause breast cancer?

No. Studies demonstrate that there is not evidence that breast implants or silicone itself causes cancer.

What is the life expectancy of an implant?

It varies from one patient to another. In some cases implants are good up to 20 years.

How long before resuming sexual activities after a breast implant surgery?

It is usually recommended to wait about 1month after surgery if wound is healing properly.

Are there any risks with plastic surgery?

Possible risks associated with plastic surgeries as for any other surgeries are hypertrophic scarring, bleeding, infection, allergic reaction, irregularities, and asymmetry. It is always recommended to follow medical instructions after a surgery. Medical tests are performed prior and after surgery to prevent any complication during and after surgery.
